The Ontario Government has announced funding to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says her government will contribute three million dollars to the international effort to contain the deadly virus.
Wynne made the announcement with Health Minister Eric Hoskins. As a former aid worker, Hoskins says he knows how valuable the money will be. He says the health care infrastructure in West Africa can’t cope with the outbreak alone. By way of comparison, he pointed out that Ontario has one doctor for every 400 citizens, while Africa has only one doctor for every 74,000 residents.
Ontario’s three million dollar donation will go to the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders. Stephen Cornish is with the Doctors agency. He says the Ebola outbreak has led to what he calls a “hidden crisis” in Africa. Cornish says people are dying of curable diseases because they are afraid to go to a hospital.
There is news this morning that the fight against the virus is paying off. Both Nigeria and Liberia have announced they haven’t had a new case of Ebola in six weeks.
