Researchers believe they have discovered how west Africa’s Ebola epidemic started.
They think it began with a 2-year-old boy playing in a hollowed out tree that had contained infected bats. The researchers were exploring an area of southeastern Guinea where the youngster became sick a year ago and died. He was the first confirmed case in the current Ebola epidemic.
While the Ebola virus was not found in bats they tested, they’re sure the little boy became infected from bats that had lived in the tree.
The current Ebola epidemic is the worst ever, and has killed almost 8-thousand people across west Africa.
The research came from work done at the Robet Koch Institute in Berlin, and was published Tuesday in EMBO Molecular Madicine.
